Torsboda Industrial Park just north of Timrå signs an agreement with PTL, a leading global manufacturer in the battery industry and one of Northvolt’s most important subcontractors. The €1,2 billion investment is estimated to create 1,900 jobs on site in Västernorrland – with room for even more.
– This is strong evidence of the entire region’s attraction to green investments. Now we are truly part of the Swedish battery cluster, says Mikael Aamisepp, Director of Investment at High Coast Invest.
The facility in Torsboda will be Europe’s largest anode production plant. It is PTL’s first anode factory establishment outside of Asia, but with four major facilities in China operated through subsidiary Zichen, the company is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of anode materials. The Swedish battery company Northvolt will be one of the main customers for the factory in Torsboda.
Torsboda Industrial Park is jointly owned by the municipalities of Sundsvall and Timrå, with Härnösand also involved in the investment. High Coast Invest met PTL in Shanghai early in the process, in 2019, and a long-term regional cooperation is now paying off.
– The fact that Torsboda lands this establishment shows how incredibly important cooperation between the municipalities is. We have had a professional reception all the way, says Mikael Aamisepp at High Coast Invest.
Swedish Northvolt works actively to invite subcontractors to produce components on fossil-free electricity grids, in accordance with Europe’s high environmental standards. In addition to contributing to a greener battery production, the hope is that PTL’s establishment will lead to more companies in the battery value chain establishing themselves in Västernorrland.
The Torsboda site still has more to give, boasting a 150-hectare area and 450 MW of clean energy.
– Torsboda has all the region’s advantages, including possibilities for industrial symbiosis. Green energy, infrastructure, skill supply from Mid Sweden University and a lot of experience from the process industry. We are incredibly happy about this establishment, and the fact that PTL will contribute to growth in the region for many years, says Mikael Aamisepp.
